Hydrus Consulting, together with Water Stewardship Australia (WSA), met with representatives from the North Central Catchment Management Authority and Coliban Water (the regional water and sewerage service provider) to see how the AWS International Standard could contribute to addressing non-point source pollution in the developing peri-urban areas of the Upper Coliban catchment.
Areas north of the Great Dividing Range, on the fringe of Melbourne’s urban sprawl, are dealing with growing populations, increasing population density and changing land-use. These are not uncommon problems around major urban areas and can impact freshwater with water cost, amenity and ecosystem consequences. The AWS International Standard can provide a respected framework for engaging different types of water users and landholders in understanding and addressing shared catchment challenges.
The group agreed to undertake some further work on aligning existing programs with the requirements of the AWS Standard as well as stakeholder analysis and engagement in the region.
Hydrus Consulting is pleased to announce that Emma MacKenzie recently became an accredited consultant for the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS).
The Water Stewardship Standard is a global standard, initiated and developed in Australia by experts in various fields of water management. Implementing the Water Stewardship Standard helps sites to:
- mitigate water risks,
- address shared water challenges in the catchment,
- improve water efficiency,
- minimize negative impacts,
- strengthen corporate reputation, and
- leverage positive impacts.
The Water Stewardship Standard can be implemented by any site, in any sector, in any catchment around the world. Furthermore, the Standard can be harnessed by others interested in mitigating corporate risks, such as water-related supply chain risks or investors, as well as public sector agencies as a framework to evaluate water stewardship practices.
The standard aligns with existing sustainability reporting frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative and Carbon Disclosure Project (Water). By implementing the Water Stewardship Standard, water users can gain access to markets, address investor concerns, and help drive innovation and new business opportunities.
